The HK Prize – A Merit-Based Award That Honors Outstanding Individuals and Organizations

hk prize is a merit-based award that honors outstanding individuals and organizations in Hong Kong. Each winner is selected through a rigorous evaluation process to uphold the highest standards of excellence and inspire others to achieve more. From nomination and initial screening to judging by experts, the entire selection process is designed to promote transparency and fairness.

Winners of the HK Prize receive a certificate, monetary prize, and public recognition. They also have the opportunity to participate in various activities, such as delivering speeches and visiting universities to share their story. In addition, they have access to funding and networking opportunities. This is a unique opportunity for young Hong Kong talent to gain international exposure.

The winners of the HK Prize are chosen by an independent panel of judges who review candidates according to predetermined criteria. The top scoring candidate in each category is selected as the winner. The process is transparent, and the winners are publicly announced at a ceremony attended by distinguished guests and dignitaries. The HK Prize has an extensive network of partners, including government agencies and private corporations, to support its mission.

A total of nine artists from Hong Kong made the shortlist this year, making it the most represented city in the history of the prize. Pakistani artist Sameen Agha won the grand prize for her sculpture A Home Is a Terrible Place to Love, a red marble piece that depicts a house collapsing and dismantling. The HK$30,000 prize money was donated to the Society for Arts Foundation (SAF), which runs expressive arts workshops for children from disadvantaged communities in Hong Kong.

In 2023/24, prize money across distance races will be significantly increased to a record high of over HK$1.62 billion, with a new bonus structure to reward Owners and trainers for their efforts in developing world-class horses. This includes a 10% increase in prize money for races at distances of up to 1600m, and an impressive increase of 20% in prize money for contests over 1600m-2400m. In particular, the G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Cup (2000m), won by Romantic Warrior in 2021, will grow to a record HK$34 million.

In addition, the HK$5 million first win bonus for PPs who make their debut in Class 3 is to remain unchanged. ISGs (International Sale Griffins) will continue to earn a HK$1 million bonus if they successfully win in Class 1 before the end of their first full season, and a further HK$2 million if they win again in Class 2 or above when rated 80 or higher before reaching five years of age. These incentives will help encourage Owners to continue investing in the quality and depth of the Hong Kong horse racing population. This will ultimately benefit all stakeholders in the industry. The new bonus system is effective from 16 October 2022.
